2018 Awards Speech – Tayla Brawner

Good evening and welcome all awardees, families, friends, teachers, mentors, as well as the staff & members of The Bernie Scholarship Awards program. I am truly honored and humbled to stand before you all this evening for the 23rd anniversary of The Bernie Scholarship Awards program. Mr. Bernie Tetreault, I would like to take this opportunity to give my gratitude for this scholarship that I am very blessed, thankful, and lucky to have received.

First off, I would like to thank God who has stood beside me through many trials and tribulations and has never failed me. I remember just like it was yesterday… walking across the stage graduating from high school 3 months pregnant with my beautiful daughter, Madison, who is now 16 months. So many emotions were coming and going that day… from deciding whether or not if I was ever going to go to college to being a great mother to thinking about pickles and cold cut sandwiches.

Fast forward to now, 2 years later… A current junior student at Trinity Washington University with less than two years to earning my Associates’ and Bachelors’ degrees as an Occupational Therapist Assistant. No, it wasn’t easy but it was definitely possible and worth it. I have been through so much and I’m pretty sure you all have been through tough times as well but it does get better…

Galatians 6 verse 9 says “Let us not become weary in doing good at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” With persistence, drive, courage and resiliency you’ll go so many places you’ve never dreamed of.

To students from all ages continuing education in the fall, motivation is key. Stay strong, determined, and focused because nothing is impossible. God always has a plan for you so don’t stress it.

To my beautiful daughter, Madison, I am so thankful to be your mother because you have pushed me to higher means… to want more out of life and not to settle for anything less than what I deserve. Mommy is doing it all for you! I love you.

To my mother-in-law and boyfriend, Joshua, I can’t thank you both enough. You both have been my support system through all the adversity we have faced in the past and present, and for that I am truly blessed and grateful that God has placed such a beautiful, loving family into my life. You both were the shoulders I leaned on when times seemed overwhelming or unbearable. From encouraging, supporting, and motivating me to do my very best you both gave me the strength I needed to continue. Thank you and I love you both.

Everyone has a paved road… what that paved road there may be many cracks, road blocks, construction signs… meaning many obstacles/challenges… with that being said… are you going to take a detour or stop?

I thank you all for allowing me to speak briefly this evening as it has been truly a blessing!
